Former Bear White Named to Olympic Qualifying Team

WACO, Texas -- Former Baylor baseball standout Steven White was among 24 players named to the 2005 Regional Olympic Qualifying Team, USA Baseball announced Thursday. White and the other non-25-man-roster players for the tournament, held Nov. 15-19 at Phoenix, Ariz.

Six countries from North and Central America are slated to compete in Arizona, with the top four finishers advancing to the Americas Olympic Qualifier at Havana, Cuba, in August 2006. In that event, the four teams representing CONCEBE will compete against the top four regional qualifiers from both the Caribbean and South American regions for two bids to the 2008 Olympic Games at Beijing, China. The third- and fourth-place finishers in Cuba will advance to a secondary Olympic qualifying event to be held sometime in 2007.

The six countries that will compete in Arizona are: Canada, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, and the United States. Games will be played each day from November 15-19, with three games taking place simultaneously starting at 1:05 p.m. local time at three different Cactus League ballparks: Maryvale Ballpark, Mesa's HoHoKam Park, and Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

White posted a 28-14 record in four seasons at Baylor, tying the school record for career wins. He also holds Baylor career records for games started (59) and innings (368.1), and he ranks second in strikeouts (320) behind only Jason Jennings. White earned All-Big 12 honors three times and was selected first team in 2002 and 2003.

Following his Baylor career, White signed with the New York Yankees organization. The Yankees selected White in the fourth round of Major League Baseball's 2003 First-Year Player Draft. White still is a member of the Yankees organization; he spent most of the 2005 season with the Trenton Thunder (AA) of the Eastern League.
