Women's Tennis 12/2/2005 12:00:00 AM
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association released its latest rankings with the women's fall regional rankings posted on their website today. From Baylor, seven of the eight Bears on 2006's roster sit within the top 21 spots on the list of the top 30 athletes in the Southwest region. Baylor has the most players ranked among the twelve schools whose athletes appear on the list, the next closest school being TCU with six ranked players. In the doubles poll, Baylor placed three duos in the top ten, another accomplishment no other school matched.

Among the singles list, four Bears sit in the top eight in the region, Zuzana Zemenova at No. 2, Zuzana Cerna at No. 4, Klara Zrustova at No. 5, and Carolin Walter at No. 8. Zemenova and Cerna both tore through the ITA Regional tournament in October and played each other in the final match where Zemenova defeated Cerna 6-4 6-1. Both received automatic bids to the national tournament though Zemenova elected not to travel. Cerna upset two nationally ranked players, including the tournament's top seed, but eventually fell in the quarterfinals.

Also in the singles rankings, numbers 19-21 belong to Baylor with Zuzana Krchnakova, Daniela Covello, and Iva Mihaylova appearing in that order.

The doubles top 15 list also has Baylor duos appearing within its teams. The Bears posted three teams among the top 10. Walter and Covello earned a spot in the top five with a No. 5 ranking. Cerna and Zrustova at ranked ninth while Krchnakova and Mihaylova are ranked 10th.

"It's great to see all of our players recognized in the rankings. It shows the depth in our program right now having seven players ranked in singles and three teams in doubles. It's really a huge accomplishment," said head coach Joey Scrivano.

The ITA national rankings will be posted Jan. 10, 2006 with both individual and team rankings.
