Women's Tennis 12/9/2005 12:00:00 AM

Dec. 9, 2005

WACO, Texas - Baylor's Athletic Director Ian McCaw presented the 2005 women's tennis team with their Big 12 Champions rings at a ceremony held last week. The Bears were undefeated last year in conference matches, 11-0, and for the second time in head coach Joey Scrivano's three years at Baylor claimed the conference title. At the end of the season, the program was ranked 14th in the nation.

Overall, the team posted an impressive 24-6 record and advanced to the quarterfinals in the NCAA tournament back in May. Their run for the national title was halted when they lost to nationally ranked No. 2 Florida. But though their team dreams were upset, then freshman Zuzana Zemenova kept the spirit alive for the Bears and became the program's first NCAA Singles National Champion. With the title, Zemenova also became the first unseeded player in NCAA history to win the singles championship.

Scrivano's roster appears the exact same as last year with no seniors lost nor freshman added. His eight athletes played in various tournaments this fall and sharpened their games in order to face one of the nation's toughest schedules this spring.

The Bears return to action on Jan. 21, 2006 when they open their spring season by hosting the SMU Mustangs at 2 p.m. at the Baylor Tennis Center.
