Softball Sweeps Pair at Getterman Classic

WACO, Texas -- The No. 17 Baylor softball team continued its winning ways at Getterman Stadium as the Lady Bears claimed wins over Centenary and Illinois during the second day of action at the Getterman Classic. Baylor cruised to an 8-0 win over Centenary in the opener before completing a tournament sweep over No. 22 Illinois with a 3-1 win in the Lady Bears' second contest of the day.
With the wins, Baylor is now 31-4 at home over the last 35 contests at Getterman Stadium and is now 20-1 all-time at the Getterman Classic.
Senior shortstop Kim Wilmoth sparked the Lady Bears attack in the opener as she went three-for-three against Centenary with two runs, two RBI and two doubles.
Baylor jumped on Centenary for three runs in the second and four more in the third to grab a seven run lead. Stephanie Pomes put the Lady Bears on the board first when she followed a Chelsi Lake single with a triple off the right field wall to bring home Lake and give Baylor an early 1-0 lead.
Wilmoth followed by driving Pomes home with a double down the left field line and eventually came around to score on a Katie Ottens ground out as the Lady Bears grabbed a three-run lead after two innings.
Baylor then exploded for four runs in the fourth to put the game away. The Lady Bears first runs in the inning came when Chelsi Lake, following hits from Kelly Osburn and Harmony Schwethelm, reached on a throwing error by shortstop Lindsey Virdell that allowed Osburn and Schwethelm to score easily as Baylor took a 5-0 lead.
Pomes added an RBI single and Wilmoth added another RBI double to push the lead to seven for the Lady Bears following three innings.
Kylie Conroy's single to centerfield in the fifth scored Wilmoth to give the Lady Bears an eight-run cushion as Sarah Hausner came into the game in the bottom of the inning and retired the final three Centenary batters to give Baylor the 8-0 run-rule victory.
Tessa Lynam picked up her first career victory in the win, allowing only one hit over the course of three shutout innings. Hausner, making her first appearance in a Lady Bears uniform, closed out the game with two shutout innings.
Kristan Morton allowed seven runs on seven hits over 2.1 innings to take the loss for Centenary.
Baylor continued the momentum in the second game as the Lady Bears moved to 4-0 on the season with a 3-1 win over No. 22 Illinois.
Lynam gave the Lady Bears the early lead in the contest as her two-out single in the bottom of the first scored Schwethelm to make the score 1-0 BU.
Illinois managed to tie the contest in the third and threatened to take the lead; however, Lisa Ferguson retired Angelena Mexicano with runners on second and third with two outs to keep the score tied.
Baylor responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-1 lead. April Luce doubled to score Erin Sheek and eventually scored on a wild pitch as the runs would prove to be enough to complete the tournament sweep of the No. 22 Fighting Illini.
Ferguson tossed four innings of shutout ball the rest of the way as she moved to 2-0 on the season. For the contest, Ferguson allowed one run on six hits as she tossed her first complete game of the season.
Claire DeVreese took the loss for Illinois, allowing three runs on six hits over six innings as she dropped to 1-1 on the season.
Wilmoth added two hits for the Lady Bears in the win as six separate Baylor players collected hits in the victory.
Baylor will look to claim its third Getterman Classic title when the Lady Bears conclude the tournament with contests against Centenary and UL-Monroe on Sunday, Feb. 6. The Lady Bears will face Centenary at 1:00 p.m. before facing UL-Monroe to close out the tournament at 3:00 p.m.
