WACO, Texas - The 17th-ranked Baylor women's tennis team raised its win streak to 10 matches with a 6-1 triumph over No. 62 Iowa at the Baylor Tennis Center on a chilly night in Waco. Baylor won the doubles point and claimed five of six singles matches to raise its season record to 11-2 while Iowa slipped to 7-4.
The Hawkeyes pushed the Lady Bears to the limit in doubles before Baylor prevailed and won the doubles point. Iowa's Anastasia Zhukova and Hilary Tyler posted an 8-6 win over Caroline Korsawe and Zuzana Cerna on court two. The Baylor duo held a 6-4 lead but the Hawkeyes swept the next four games to earn the win. At No. 1 doubles, Klara Zrustova and Zuzana Zemenova of Baylor broke a 5-5 tie over Hillary Mintz and Megan Racette and went on to win the next three games to knot the doubles at one match each. At No. 3, BU's Zuzana Krchnakova and Iva Mihaylova led 6-3 at one point but Iowa's Morgan Tuttle and Milica Veselinovic eventually tied it at 8-8. In the tiebreaker, the Bears sprinted out to a 5-1 lead but allowed Iowa to score three of the next four points to close to within 6-4. Mihaylova hit a smash to the back corner to give the Lady Bears the match 9-8 (7) and the doubles point.
In singles Baylor's Zuzana Krchnakova, Caroline Korsawe, Zuzana Cerna and Klara Zrustova walked off the court quickly with straight set wins at Nos. 5, 6, 2 and 3, respectively. The victory enabled Zrustova to extend her win streak to 11 matches while Krchnakova has now won 10 straight and Zemenova has posted nine consecutive triumphs. At the No. 1 spot, BU's Zuzana Zemenova and Iowa's Megan Racette split the first two sets and played a 10-point tiebreaker to decide the winner. Zemenova jumped out to a 4-2 lead and went on to win the tiebreaker by a score of 10-8.
Baylor will host fifth-ranked Vanderbilt on Sat., March 19 at 1 p.m. at the Baylor Tennis Center. On Sunday, Kansas State will come to Waco for a noon match.
