Waco, Texas - Baylor's 17th ranked women's tennis team lost in a hard fought match to the 5th ranked Vanderbilt Commodores, 4-3. The Lady Bears suffer their first home loss of the season and break a 10 game win-streak.
In doubles play, the Baylor women fought hard against the Commodores, but eventually lost the doubles point. The Lady Bears fell behind early when Vanderbilt's Audra Falk and Amanda Taylor quickly defeated Baylor's 24th ranked duo of Daniela Covello and Zuzana Zemenova 8-2 on court one. The Lady Bears tried to mount a comeback on courts two and three, but fell short. At No. 3 doubles, Baylor's Carolin Walter and Zuzana Krchnakova fought back from a 5-2 deficit and trailed only one game behind the Vanderbilt duo of Annie Menees and Caroline Ferrell, but the Lady Bears fell 8-5. On court two, Baylor's Zuzana Cerna and Klara Zrustova held a 6-4 advantage, but the Commodores swept the next four games to win 8-6.
In singles, Baylor fell behind early when Daniella Covello was defeated 6-2, 6-3 by Vanderbilt's Taka Bertrand. This gave the Commodores a 2-0 point advantage over the Lady Bears, but shortly after, the Baylor women tied it up. Baylor's Zuzana Cerna defeated Vanderbilt's Amanda Taylor 6-1, 6-3, and Zuzana Krchnakova beat Caroline Ferrell 6-2, 6-2, tying the score at 2 points. After Vanderbilt's Amanda Fish defeated Baylor's Carolin Walter, the Lady Bears tied the score again when Klara Zrustova defeated Annie Menees 7-5, 6-1.
The deciding match came down to court one with Baylor's 21st ranked Zuzana Zemenova and Vanderbilt's 14th ranked Audra Falk. Zuzana Zemenova won the first set 6-3 and fought back from a 4-1 deficit in the second set to force a tie-breaker. After falling to a 4-1 deficit in the tie-breaker, Vanderbilt's Audra Falk fought her way back to win 7-5, taking the second set 7-6 and forcing a third and final set. Zemenova fell behind 3-0 in the final set and then tied it at 3-3, only to eventually fall 6-3.
Baylor will host Kansas State on Sunday, March 20 at noon at the Baylor Tennis Center.
