LUBBOCK, Texas --- The No. 7 Baylor softball team exploded for five runs in the first and four more in the second as the Lady Bears cruised to a 10-2 six-inning win over Texas Tech in action at Rocky Johnson Field. The win gave the Lady Bears a two-game sweep of the Red Raiders as Baylor improved to 31-4 on the season, 2-1 in the Big 12 Conference, while Texas Tech fell to 18-11 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
Baylor jumped on the Red Raiders early, knocking out Texas Tech starter Kelly Tucker after the first five Lady Bear batters of the game reached base. After Kelly Osburn singled up the middle to lead-off the game, Harmony Schwethelm tripled down the right field line to give Baylor a 1-0 lead.
Following a Tessa Lynam walk, Lynam and Schwethem executed a perfect double steal as Schwethelm scored for a 2-0 Baylor lead.
Chelsi Lake then put the Lady Bears up 4-0 with a two-run line drive home run over the left field fence for her third home run of the series. The blast was the 12th of the season for Lake, establishing a new single season home record for Baylor as she broke the previous record of 11 set by Bri Chambliss in 1997. Lake's home run also gave her 43 RBI on the season, breaking the school season RBI mark held by Kristin Barton, who had 40 RBI in 1996.
April Luce put the finishing touches on the inning when her ground out to second base scored Stephanie Pomes to give the Lady Bears a 5-0 advantage.
Baylor added four runs in the second to give the Lady Bears a nine run advantage. After Schwethelm scored on a double by Lynam, pinch runner Jordan Daniels and Lynam scored on a fielding error by the right fielder to give Baylor an 8-0 lead. Luce added a RBI single in the inning, her second of the game as Baylor took a 9-0 lead into the bottom of the inning.
Texas Tech cut the lead to seven when Jennifer Corkin hit a two-run single up the middle, however, the Red Raiders could not do any further damage in the inning as Baylor led 9-2 heading into the fourth.
Baylor added a run in the sixth when Kylie Conroy scored on a fielding error to make it 10-2 as Nicole Jackson shut down the Red Raiders in the bottom of the inning as the game ended due to the run rule.
Jackson picked up the win for Baylor, allowing only two hits and no runs in 3.2 innings of relief to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Tucker took the loss for Texas Tech, allowing five runs on three hits as she fell to 0-2 on the season.
The two-game series sweep on the road was the first for Baylor since the Lady Bears took two games at Missouri on April 6-7, 2002.
The Lady Bears will return to action on Wednesday, March 30, at 6:30 p.m. when Baylor hosts Texas at Getterman Stadium.
