Third-year Coach Guy Morriss' Baylor football team opened spring practice under picture-perfect conditions Wednesday with a two-hour afternoon workout in helmets and shorts on the grass practice fields at Floyd Casey Stadium.
"It was good to get out of the office and back on the practice field," Morriss said. "It was a beautiful day to get started on. I believe the kids' energy level was good and they were flying around pretty good out there."
"It is hard to evaluate hitting and those kinds of things without pads on, but I thought the technique and assignments were really good.," he added. "I was impressed with the way they came out and executed everything. That puts us a little bit ahead of where we were last year, which is good in the building process. We're pleased with today's effort--now we have to keep doing it for the next 14 workouts."
Baylor will take Thursday off, then hold its second spring workout on Friday at 3 p.m. in helmets and shorts before going through the first of 12 full-pad practices on April 2 at 9 a.m. All practices are open to the public.
The Bears, who return 13 starters from a year ago, will end spring practice April 23rd with the annual Green-Gold Spring Game at Floyd Casey Stadium. All-told, the NCAA allows 15 spring workouts including the Spring Game.
Practice Note: The only returning letterwinner who is working at a new position in spring practice is junior Julian Hill, who spent last year at defensive tackle but is working at defensive end this spring. Hill started four of his nine appearances as a sophomore and was credited with nine tackles (four solo) on the year.
