No. 9 Softball Shuts Down Texas-Arlington

WACO, Texas - The No. 9 Baylor softball team grabbed an early lead with two runs in the first inning and never looked back as the Lady Bears cruised to an 8-0 win over Texas-Arlington in action at Getterman Stadium. With the win, Baylor improved to 22-3 on the season as the Lady Mavericks dropped to 8-12 with the loss.

Tessa Lynam put the Lady Bears on the board first with her double off the top of the right field wall to score Harmony Schwethlem and give the Lady Bears a 1-0 lead. Lynam then came around to score on Kim Wilmoth's single to right field as Baylor scored in the first inning for the 17th time in 25 games.

After a scoreless second inning, Baylor added three runs in the third to extend the lead to 5-0. Chelsi Lake doubled home Lynam and Schwethelm as Stephanie Pomes added a double to score Jordan Daniels to give the Lady Bears a 5-0 lead.

With runners on first and third and no outs in the fifth inning, Pomes then smacked her second double of the day, easily scoring Lake and Wilmoth as Baylor opener up a seven-run cushion in the fifth.

After Lynam retired the side in the sixth, Lake gave Baylor the run-rule victory with her single to score Osburn as the Lady Bears ended the game with an 8-0 victory.

The win marked the 10th time this season Baylor has scored at least eight runs and the 15th time the Lady Bears have posted at least 10 hits in a game.

Baylor starter Cristin Vitek improved to 7-2 on the season as she pitched a perfect four innings of work, retiring 12 straight batters before she was relieved in the fifth inning by Lynam.

Lynam shut down the Lady Mavericks the rest of the way, allowing one hit in two scoreless innings of work as the Lady Bears recorded their sixth shutout of the season.

Jill Garro took the loss for Texas-Arlington, allowing eight runs on 15 hits in 5.1 innings of work as she dropped to 3-7 on the season.

Lake led the way with three hits for Baylor while Pomes added three RBI in the win as the Lady Bears defeated Texas-Arlington for the third straight time.

Baylor will return to action on Thursday, March 10, when the Lady Bears travel to Tampa, Fla., for the Speedline Classic. The Lady Bears will open play at the tournament when Baylor faces Temple at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday before meeting Long Island at 5:00 p.m.
