WACO, Texas - The No.15 Baylor women's tennis team fell to No.19 Tulane 4-3 Sunday. The match was played at indoor facilities in Ennis, Texas due to rain.
After a big win over No.12 Texas and another conference win over Texas Tech this week, the Bears just couldn't hold on to today's Tulane match. With the loss, the Bears are now 17-4 on the season, 8-0 in the Big 12.
After the rain moved the match indoors, play began around 2 p.m. The Bears dropped all three doubles matches giving Tulane a 1-0 lead going into singles.
In singles, things looked hopeful early on as Zuzana Cerna defeated No. 118 Julie Smekodub 6-0, 7-6 (7) and No. 24 Zuzana Zemenova downed Tulane's Maria Ivanov 6-3, 6-0. Things began to turn around for the Bears as Carolin Walter fell to No. 46 Jenny Kuehn 6-2, 6-3.
Down 3-2, the Bears couldn't pull out the win. Klara Zrustova and Iva Mihaylova both lost in two sets to give Tulane the 4-3 victory.
The other win for the Bears came from the No. 5 spot as Daniela Covello defeated No. 97 Nancy Kockett 6-4, 6-1.
The Bears will return to conference action as they travel to College Station, Texas on Thursday to face Texas A&M University at 6 p.m.
