BRYAN, Texas - The Baylor men's golf team began the day with an opening round 303, then rebounded with a 294 in the afternoon and stand tied for ninth after two rounds of the Aggie Invitational Saturday at 7,146-yard, par-72 Traditions Golf Club.
Sophomore Jeremy Alcorn (Brownwood, Texas) fired a 2-under par 70 in the opening round thanks to five birdies. Alcorn shot even-par 72 in the second round overcoming back-to-back bogeys on No. 9 and No. 10 with birdies on 13 and 15. Alcorn is tied for fifth at 142.
Sophomores Jeremy Frye (Palestine, Texas) and Chase Thomas (Dallas, Texas) are tied for 38th at 152. Frye opened with an 80, before firing an even-par 72. Frye had four birdies in the second round, including three in a row on holes two, three and four. Thomas shot identical scores of 76, with three birdies in the first round and one in the second.
Redshirt freshman Dusty Isabell (Athens, Texas) is tied for 55th at 154 with matching scores of 77, while sophomore Colton Turnquist (Austin, Texas) is tied for 59th overcoming an 81 in the first round to post a 74 in the second. Redshirt freshman Brian Meck (Austin, Texas), playing individually, is tied for 28th shooting 78 and 72 for a score of 150. Meck carded six birdies in the second round.
New Mexico and Oklahoma State are tied for the overall lead at 580, while SMU (582) trails by two, Texas Tech (585) and Texas (591) rounds out the top five. The sixth through 13th place teams are all within 10 strokes of the top five. New Mexico's Spencer Levin has a four stroke lead at 8-under par 136 (67-69), leading Texas' Jeff Bell at 140 (72-68). Oklahoma State's Anthony Kim (72-69) and Tyler Leon (69-72) are tied for third at 141.
The tournament, which is the Bears' final tuneup before the Big 12 Championships in two weeks, concludes Sunday with the third and final round.
