No. 8 Softball Shuts Down Texas State

SAN MARCOS, Texas --- The No. 8 Baylor softball team jumped out to an early lead on Texas State and cruised to a 7-0 win over the Bobcats in action at Bobcat Stadium. With the win, Baylor improves to 41-8 on the season as Texas State falls to 23-24 with the loss.
Baylor jumped out to an early lead on the Bobcats, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. After Kelly Osburn led off the game with a single, Chelsi Lake took a 3-2 pitch well over the center field wall as the Lady Bears grabbed a 2-0 lead. The home run was the 14th of the season for Lake, extending her school record in the category.
The Lady Bears struck again in the second, scoring two more runs to make the score 4-0. With two outs and runners at second and third, Harmony Schwethelm singled to the left side of the infield, scoring Jordan Daniels from third to give Baylor a three-run lead. Baylor added the final run in the inning when Schwethelm and Kylie Conroy executed a double steal. On the throw down to second in an attempt to throw out Schwethelm, Conroy came home from third as the Lady Bears grabbed a commanding four-run advantage.
After a scoreless third, April Luce extended the Baylor lead to five when she led off the inning with a home run down the left field line, her third of the season, to give the Lady Bears a 5-0 lead.
Baylor continued to build its lead on Texas State in the fifth as Stephanie Pomes blasted her 12th home run of the season with one out in the inning as the Lady Bears grabbed a 6-0 lead.
Lake put the final run on the board for the Lady Bears as she drove home Osburn from third with a sacrifice fly to center as Baylor took a 7-0 lead heading into the bottom of the inning.
The lead was more than enough for Sarah Hausner, who improved to 2-0 on the season after relieving Baylor starter Cristin Vitek in the fourth inning. In 2.1 innings of work, Hausner allowed no runs on two hits as the junior transfer recorded her second career win.
Lisa Ferguson came into the game in the seventh and retired the side, allowing one hit, as Baylor pitching recorded its 11th shutout of the season.
Vitek was effective for Baylor in 3.2 innings of work, allowing no runs on three hits while striking out four Bobcat batters.
Katie Ann Trahan took the loss for Texas State as she fell to 20-17 on the season after allowing five runs on nine hits in four innings of work.
Baylor will return to action on Saturday, April 23, when the Lady Bears open a two-game series at home against Missouri at 2:00 p.m. The weekend home series with the Tigers mark the final home games of the regular season for the Lady Bears, with the season finale scheduled for Sunday, April 24, at 1:00 p.m.
