Behind the running of junior Paul Mosley and sophomore Brandon Whitaker, the Gold team rolled to a 70-26 victory in the Baylor football team's annual spring game Saturday afternoon at Floyd Casey Stadium. The Bears' Gold squad, comprised mainly of projected 2005 starters, rolled up 424 total-offense yards on the day, while holding the Green team to 90 total yards.
"I was kind of disappointed in the Green team, they didn't really show up much," said third-year Baylor coach Guy Morriss. "I thought they'd go out there and compete a little harder. But, overall, we were OK. The White team moved the ball pretty good.
"I'll tell you what, M.T. (Robinson, defensive tackle) made some plays today, I saw him show up little bit and that was good to see," he added. "Overall, I think we've had a good spring. It was a good day today. We came out of today without any injuries, which was good. We're pleased with the work we got today."
Whitaker, who sat out the 2004 season as a redshirt while recovering from a knee injury, rushed for a scrimmage-high 115 yards on nine carries (12.7 ypc) and scored four touchdowns. The White squad scored eight rushing touchdowns on the afternoon, with Whitaker scoring on runs of 62 (a scrimmage-long rush), 1, 7 and 7 yards. Mosley, meanwhile, Baylor's top rusher a year ago, had a scrimmage-high 14 totes for 88 yards and two touchdowns, while averaging 6.3 ypc.
"That's kind of a good punch (at running back)," Morriss said. "You've got a power guy who hammer it up inside in Paul Mosley and a quick guy who can slash you and cut back, hit the sidelines and go in Brandon Whitaker. They are going to compliment each other very well."
Junior quarterback Shawn Bell, who directed the Bears to a memorable 35-34 overtime upset win over No. 16 Texas A&M a year ago before breaking his non-throwing hand the following week at Texas Tech, completed 16 of 20 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns with one interception for the Gold squad. He also rushed two times for 18 yards and scored on a 3-yard run.
"I think they respond to Shawn (Bell) and that's the kind of leadership that he provides," Morriss said. "I know that Daniel (Sepulveda, the 2004 Ray Guy Award winner) didn't punt the ball once and I was trying to think if we had any penalties or anything like that. They were pretty efficient with the football today, which is good to see.
"He (Bell) seems more mature and more comfortable back there," Morriss added. "Shawn has a better grasp of what we are trying to get done and he knows where he is supposed to go with the football. He knows the personnel that are supposed to be around him and he can get people adjusted. The thing that makes him good in our system is the respect he gets from the other 10 guys out there on the field. The guys respect him and they'll follow him as a quarterback and a leader, that's important."
Baylor will open fall camp Aug. 7 in preparation for its Sept. 3 season opener at SMU.
Scrimmage Notes: Ten players, including projected Baylor starters Will Blaylock (center) and Braelon Davis (cornerback), were held out of the scrimmage due to injury ... OS Willie Andrews and CB Anthony Arline recorded interceptions for the White squad, while OS Marlon Price had an interception for the Green team ... Junior place-kicker Ryan Havens and redshirt freshman place-kicker Andrew Ireland were perfect on the day with Havens hitting 8-of-8 PATs and Ireland hitting 3-of-3 PATs and nailing all four of his field goal attempts from 25, 37, 34 and 38 yards ... Bell completed passes to 10 different receivers with junior wide receiver Dominique Zeigler hauling in a scrimmage-high four passes for 53 yards and one TD.
