AUSTIN, Texas - The 15th-ranked Baylor women's tennis team won its first match in the 2005 Big 12 Tournament hosted by the University of Texas at the Penick-Alison Tennis Center on Friday. The Lady Bears defeated Missouri 4-0 and advanced to the tournament semifinals where they will face fourth-seeded Texas A&M on Saturday at 11 a.m.
The victory raised the Lady Bears' record to 21-4 while Missouri dropped to 14-9.
Baylor's two doubles winners finished within a minute of each other, both winning by 8-4 margins. Zuzana Zemenova and Klara Zrustova, playing at No. 2, were the first to finish as they defeated Yelena Olshanskaya and Erika Josbena. At the top spot, Daniela Covello and Zuzana Cerna clinched the doubles point for the Bears with a win over Katka Sevcikova and Carolyn Kramer. Baylor's third tandem, Carolin Walter and Caroline Korsawe, were leading their match 5-3 when play was suspended.
The Lady Bears continued their domination in singles, quickly gaining the three points needed to secure the win. Baylor swept the first set at every court but Cerna, playing at No. 2, was off the court first with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kraftova. On court three, BU's Walter secured point number three with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Olshanskaya. Klara Zrustova clinched the Baylor victory with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Josbena at No. 5 singles.
"The team played a disciplined, focused match from start to finish. It's good to get this first match under our belt and move forward to our next opponent," said head coach Joey Scrivano.
