Softball Rebounds with Win over Cowgirls

WACO, Texas --- The No. 8 Baylor softball team earned a split in the two-game series against Oklahoma State as the Lady Bears cruised to a 6-2 win over the Cowgirls in action at Getterman Stadium. With the win, Baylor improves to 33-5 on the season, 4-2 in the Big 12 Conference, as Oklahoma State falls to 27-11, 2-2 in conference play.
Baylor used a three-run second inning to grab the early lead. With Carrie Leerberg on third, Kylie Conroy hit a sacrifice fly to right, allowing Leerberg to score to give the Lady Bears a 1-0 lead. Harmony Schwethelm followed with the key hit in the inning, tripling down the right field line to score Conroy, who reached on an error, and Osburn as Baylor grabbed a 3-0 lead.
After Oklahoma State cut the lead to two with a run in the fourth, the Lady Bears exploded for three runs in the fifth to take control of the game with a five-run lead. Melissa Huffhines knocked in the first run of the inning with a double down the left field line to score Leerberg to give the Lady Bears a 4-1 lead. Schwethelm then added her third and fourth RBI of the game with a double to left, scoring Conroy and April Luce, as the Lady Bears grabbed a 6-1 lead.
Oklahoma State managed a run in the sixth; however, it was not enough as Cristin Vitek shut down the Cowgirls the rest of the way to record her first save of the season. In the save, Vitek allowed one run on two hits in three innings of work.
Lisa Ferguson picked up the win for Baylor to improve to 12-1 on the season as she allowed only one run on six hits in four innings of work.
Jessica Hoppock took the loss for Oklahoma State, falling to 11-7 on the season, as she allowed three runs on four hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Schwethelm, Osburn and Leerberg led the Baylor attack with two hits each as Schwethelm added four RBI, a career high, in the win.
Baylor will return to action on Wednesday, April 6, when the Lady Bears travel to Arlington, Texas, to face Texas-Arlington in a single game at 6:00 p.m.
