AUSTIN, Texas - The top-ranked Baylor men's tennis team advanced to the finals of the Big 12 Tournament for the fourth straight year with its 4-1 win over the University of Texas at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin on Saturday. The Bears will take on Oklahoma State, 4-3 winners over Texas A&M, at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The victory raised the Bears' record to 27-0 and extended their school-record win streak to 51 matches while Texas dropped to 12-9.
In doubles, Baylor won on courts one and two. At No. 1 Benedikt Dorsch and Matija Zgaga posted an 8-6 win over Callum Beale and Travis Helgeson, 8-6. Lars Poerschke and Michal Kokta reeled off three straight games to claim an 8-5 win over Hubert Chodkiewicz and Roger Gubser on court two and raised their season record to 23-4.
Baylor's Poerschke gave the Bears their second point when he posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over Milan Mihailovic at No. 3. Texas gained its only point of the day when Luis Diaz Barriga halted Zgaga's 10-match win streak with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the No. 5 spot. BU senior Greg Shearer quickly disposed of Garrett Snyder on court six 6-1, 6-1 and Benjamin Becker clinched the match for the Bears with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Helgeson. On court one, Dorsch had won the first match at the top spot and led 4-1 in the second when play was suspended. Texas' Gubser posted a 7-5 first-set win over Kokta at No. 4 but Kokta led 2-0 in the second set when play was halted.
"Texas had a lot of momentum coming into the match after their big win yesterday. We didn't manage ourselves very well in spots in doubles but did a much better job in singles. We're excited about playing in the championship. We have a lot of respect for Oklahoma State. It's a chance to play another big match ," said head coach Matt Knoll.
