The Baylor football team completed its sixth spring practice and fourth in full pads with Friday afternoon's two-hour workout on the Floyd Casey Stadium grass fields. The Bears are slated to hold the first of their three spring scrimmages Saturday at 9 a.m. inside Floyd Casey Stadium.
"I'm expecting a good scrimmage on Saturday and a good day on both sides of the ball," said third-year coach Guy Morriss. "We've had three padded practices now. The first one was really good, today was pretty good and we sagged a little bit the day after the celebration with the Lady Bears.
"But, otherwise, we've had good work," he added. "We're a lot better football team. I think you can see it in the way that they (the players) react. They are really flowing to the ball and the technique comes back quicker. That's the thing the young kids are missing, technique work, because they aren't real sure if they are doing the right thing or not. The more reps we give them, the better they will be.
Saturday's scrimmage, which is open to all fans, will be an opportunity for Morriss and his staff to evaluate the younger players in the Baylor program. The scrimmage will feature the Bears' top offensive and defensive units going head-to-head for a limited number of snaps. All-told, the top two units will likely get 50 snaps each with the third team getting the remainder of the scrimmage time.
"We are really trying to focus on some of those young kids because we've got a pretty good idea of who can and can't play of the older group," Morriss said. "All the kids that we redshirted last year, we are going to put a lot of reps into them tomorrow. We are going to have a true scrimmage tomorrow and turn them loose for about a 120 plays.
"I think it (the scrimmage) is something that we need to do at this point. I probably won't breathe until about noon, but that's part of the game. If we get someone hurt, we'll have to put the next guy in and go on."
Following the workout, Kim Mulkey-Robertson, coach of the 2005 NCAA champion Lady Bear basketball team, spoke to Morriss' team on the practice field.
Notes: Morriss indicated that junior Shawn Bell has moved ahead of sophomore Terrance Parks after six practices in the Bears' 2005 quarterback derby ... Two projected starters along the Baylor offensive line, senior OG Evan Stone and junior C Will Blaylock, are out with injury ... Stone has missed every spring workout with a hamstring pull, while Blaylock is out with an ankle injury sustained earlier in spring drills ... After Saturday's workout, which marks the end of the second week of spring ball, Baylor will return to work next week with practices on April 12, 14, 15 and 16 ... All Baylor practices are open to the public.
