WACO, Texas --- After the No. 8 Baylor softball team grabbed an early 1-0 lead, No. 25 Nebraska's Trisha Tannahill hit a grand slam in the third inning that proved to be the difference as the Huskers claimed a 4-1 win over the Lady Bears in action at Getterman Stadium. With the loss, Baylor falls to 36-6, 4-3 in Big 12 play, while Nebraska improves to 24-13 and 2-4 in the conference.
Melissa Huffhines put the Lady Bears on the board first with her single to right in the second inning, scoring Tessa Lynam as Baylor grabbed an early 1-0 lead. Stephanie Pomes also tried to score on the play; however, was thrown out on a close play at home as Nebraska managed to keep it a one-run game heading into the third.
The Huskers rallied for four unearned runs in the next inning as Nebraska took control of the game behind Tannahill's grand slam. After loading the bases with no outs, Baylor starter Cristin Vitek almost worked out of the jam, retiring the next two batters without allowing a runner to score. Vitek, however, could not retire the left-handed hitter as Tannahill lifted a 3-1 pitch over the right-center field wall, clearing the bases and giving the Huskers a 4-1 lead.
The Huskers lead was preserved by starter Ashley DeBuhr, who did not allow the run the rest of the way, as she improved to 14-11 on the season after allowing only one run on three hits in the complete game win.
Vitek took the loss for Baylor as she fell to 11-4 on the season after allowing four unearned runs on two hits in 3.1 innings of work. Lisa Ferguson tossed 3.2 innings of effective relief for Baylor, allowing only one hit while striking out five.
The loss was the seventh straight for Baylor against Nebraska as the Lady Bears fell to 4-26 all-time against the Huskers.
Baylor will look to salvage a split in the series when the teams meet for the series finale at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 10.
