Softball Cruises Past Iowa State to Split Series

AMES, Iowa --- Trailing 3-0 heading into the top of the fourth, the No. 8 Baylor softball team scored 11 unanswered runs over the next three innings to cruise to an 11-3 win over Iowa State in action at the Southwest Athletic Complex. With the win, Baylor improved to 45-9 overall, 11-6 in conference play, while Iowa State fell to 18-29, 3-13 in the conference.
The Cyclones grabbed the early lead on the Lady Bears with a pair of runs in the first inning. After Kim Rodgers led off the game with a solo home run over the center field wall, Ashley Killeen added a RBI double in the frame give the Cyclones a 2-0 lead.
Iowa State extended the lead to three with a run in the second when Rodgers posted her second RBI of the game with a run-scoring single up the middle.
After a scoreless third, Tessa Lynam sparked the Lady Bears rally with a two-run home run to left-center field, scoring Emily Gipe from second and cutting the Cyclones lead to one at 3-2. The home run was the 11th of the season for Lynam and allowed Gipe to score her first career run in a Baylor uniform.
With Iowa State unable to score in the bottom of the inning, Baylor exploded for six runs on three hits in the fifth as the Lady Bears were aided by two Cyclone errors in taking a commanding 8-3 lead. After Kylie Conroy scored on a fielding error to tie the game, Harmony Schwethelm gave the Lady Bears the lead when she scored on a fielder's choice to give the Lady Bears a 4-3 advantage.
Kim Wilmoth added a RBI single while Conroy added a RBI double during the six-run outburst as Baylor's six runs in the inning were all unearned.
Baylor added two more insurance runs in the sixth as the Lady Bears' Lisa Ferguson shut down the Cyclones in order in the bottom of the inning to give BU the run-rule victory.
Ferguson picked up the victory for the Lady Bears with 2.2 innings of perfect relief, retiring all eight batters she faced to improve to 17-3 on the season.
Alyssa Ransom picked up the loss for the Cyclones to fall to 11-17 on the season after allowing five runs in 4.1 innings of work.
Wilmoth and Lynam each had two RBI in the win as Stephanie Pomes and Schwethelm each scored two runs in the win.
Baylor will close out the regular season when the Lady Bears travel to College Station, Texas, to face Texas A&M at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 4.
