AUSTIN, Texas - The 15th-ranked Baylor women's tennis team lost in the championship match of the 2005 Big 12 Tournament at the University of Texas' Penick-Allison Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. The10th-ranked Texas Longhorns eeked out a 4-3 win over the Lady Bears.
The loss dropped the Lady Bears' record to 22-5 while Texas moves to 20-5.
Baylor's Zuzana Cerna and Daniela Covello got Baylor its only doubles win when they were off the court first with an 8-2 win over Katie Ruckert and Kendra Strohm at No. 1. Texas rebounded and took victories at courts two and three both by scores of 8-4.
Texas gained its second point of the match when Mia Marovic, the tournament's most outstanding performer, downed Cerna at No. 2, 6-3, 6-0. Baylor evened the score at 2-2 when Zuzana Krchnakova and Zemenova won at courts six and one, respectively. Texas' Courtney Zauft was victorious on court five and Baylor's Carolin Walter posted a three set win at No. 3 to even the match at 3-3. After losing the first set to BU's Daniela Covello on court four 7-5, Texas' Ruckert rebounded to win the next two 6-4, 6-1 to clinch the match for the Longhorns.
"You certainly don't help yourself when you lose doubles. I felt like in singles we had matches we could have done better in. At No. 4 (the deciding match) Covello had her chances but Ruckert made adjustments and we didn't," said head coach Joey Scrivano.
