WACO, Texas - Baylor freshman Zuzana Zemenova became just the second Baylor women's player to earn All-American status when she advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga., on Tuesday.
Zemenova posted a win over North Carolina's Aniela Mojzis in the round of 32 to advance in the tournament. Zemenova, ranked No. 23, defeated the 41st-ranked Mojzis, 6-1, 7-6(6) to advance. She will take on 61st-ranked Anne Yelsey of Stanford who defeated Wake Forest's Karin Coetzee, 6-3, 6-1. Yelsey had advanced to the round of 32 by upsetting 10th-ranked Shadisha Robinson of Georgia. The match is slated to begin at 10:30 a.m. (CDT).
Zemenova joins former Baylor standout Katja Kovac as an ITA Singles All-American. Parekh became Baylor's first All-American when she advanced to the round of 16 in 2000 before exiting the tournament.
In other round of 32 singles action, sophomore Carolin Walter saw her 10-match win streak halted when she lost to 3rd-seeded and 4th-ranked Audra Cohen of Northwestern, 6-1, 7-5. Walter, ranked No. 55, finished her second season as a Lady Bear with a 20-7 singles record.
Baylor's tandem of Daniela Covello and Zuzana Cerna drew the toughest assignment of the doubles bracket. They tangled with the tournament's top-seeded duo of Caroline Basu and Shadisha Robinson of Georgia. Cerna and Covello put up a valiant effort before falling 6-4, 6-3. The Lady Bear duo finished the season with 14-10 record.
