WACO, Texas - Baylor freshman Zuzana Zemenova advanced to the quarterfinals in the NCAA Tournament at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga., on Wednesday thus becoming the first Baylor women's player to advance past the round of 16.
Zemenova posted a three-set win over 61st-ranked Anne Yelsey of Stanford. Yelsey had advanced to the round of 32 by upsetting 10th-ranked Shadisha Robinson of Georgia. The 23rd-ranked Zemenova out of Kocise, Slovakia, got off to a fast start taking the first set 6-4. Yelsey rallied and won the second set in a tiebreaker, outscoring Zemenova 7-3 in the tiebreak. Zemenova gained the win with a 7-5 score in the finals stanza.
Zemenova, who is now Baylor women's tennis' second singles All-American, will take on Virginia Commonwealth's Marianna Yuferova in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Yuferova, ranked No. 67, advanced by posting upset wins over top-ranked Megan Bradley of Miami (Fla.), 6-4, 6-1and 16th-ranked Lindsey Nelson (Southern California), 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
The winner of the Zemenova/Yuferova match will take on the winner of the Aibika Kalsarieva (No. 4 seed, No. 3 rank)/Jennifer Magley (No. 5 seed and No. 5 rank). Klasarieva plays for Kentucky and Magley represents Florida.
