Zuzana Zemenova Named a Honda Award Finalist

ATHENS, Ga. - Baylor's women's tennis player Zuzana Zemenova is one of four finalists for the Honda-Broderick Cup Award for women's tennis. Zemenova is the first Baylor student-athlete to be nominated for the presitigious award.

The Collegiate Women Sports Awards is very pleased to announce the finalists for tennis. The winner will be decided by nationwide voting among NCAA member schools and will receive the 2004-2005 Honda Award for tennis and become a nominee for The Honda-Broderick Cup awarded annually to the nation's outstanding collegiate woman athlete of the year.

Zemenova has won 25 of her last 27 outings, including straight-set victories in 21 of those matches and has advanced to the finals of the NCAA Singles Tournament. Prior to Zemenova's advancement to the finals, Baylor had never even had a player reach the quarterfinals of the singles tournament. She has a season singles record of 28-5, which ties for 9th most wins in Baylor history. In addition, Zemenova is 15-4 versus ranked opponents. She earned one tournament crown during her freshman season at the Ballantrae Challenger in Birmingham, Ala., in mid-October. Zemenova has also been named Big 12 Player of the Year, Big 12 Freshman of the Year, is an All-Big 12 Selection and Big 12 Champion at No. 1 position with a 9-0 mark. The newcomer was also named Southwest Region's Rookie of the Year.

In addition to the honor of this selection, American Honda will donate $1,000 to the women's athletic fund of each nominee's university and the winner's program will receive $5,000.

The ballot will be sent to all NCAA senior women administrators Tuesday, May 31 and you will be notified of the results of the balloting after 12 noon P.D.T. June 3.
