Baseball Adds Two More Draftees

WACO, Texas - Baylor senior right-handed pitcher Sean Walker and junior right-handed pitcher Abe Woody both were selected during Wednesday's second session of the 2005 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Along with the selection of seven Bears in Tuesday's first session, Baylor had a program-record nine players selected in this year's draft.

Walker, who has seen spot action this season after off-season knee surgery, was a 24^th-round selection by the Houston Astros. This was Walker's first time drafted.

Woody, who leads Baylor both in wins at 9-3 and in saves with 11, also was drafted for the first time, going to the Cincinnati Reds in the 31^st round.

Baylor's nine draftees bring the program's draftee total to 53 during head coach Steve Smith's 11-year tenure. Major League teams have used 27 picks on Baylor players over the past four seasons, including two first-round selections, 11 picks in the first 10 rounds and 16 first-day selections.

This year's Baylor squad eclipsed the 2003 team's previous program record of eight draft selections. The 2005 Bears also came one shy of the Big 12 Conference record for total draft selections in one year; Texas A&M had 10 players drafted in 2002.

Baylor, ranked sixth in this week's Baseball America Top 25, returns to action this weekend, hosting No. 13 Clemson for the 2005 NCAA Waco Super Regional at Baylor Ballpark. The Bears and the Tigers meet Saturday at 11 a.m. CDT and Sunday at 3 p.m. If necessary, a third game would be played Monday at a time yet to be determined. All games will be televised live on ESPN.
