WACO, Texas - Jaime Bubela, who earned first-team all-conference honors while a member of Baylor's 2000 Big 12 Conference championship team, joined the Seattle Mariners as a September call-up Tuesday. Bubela joins Jason Jennings of the Colorado Rockies, Kelly Shoppach of the Boston Red Sox and Kip Wells of the Pittsburgh Pirates as the fourth former Bear currently active in Major League Baseball.
A 2000 first-team ABCA All-Midwest Region selection, Bubela hit .292 with nine home runs, 20 doubles, five triples and 40 stolen bases this season for the Double-A San Antonio Missions. Bubela led the Missions to the 2003 Texas League championship before sustaining a torn anterior cruciate ligament during the off-season. He spent most of the 2004 season in rehabilitation but returned to lead the Missions to their fourth playoff appearance in five years this season.
The Mariners selected Bubela with their seventh-round selection in the 2000 First-Year Player Draft, one of seven Bears drafted that season. Bubela is the 36th former Bear to make a Major League Baseball roster, the fifth since 1999.
