Baylor junior quarterback Shawn Bell was one of 11 players selected to the 2005 American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team. The first Bear ever named to this honor squad, which salutes student-athletes community service activities, Bell was one of four Big 12 players on the Division I-A team.
The two 11-man teams, a Division I-A team and a combined team from Divisions I-AA, II, III and the NAIA, honor players for their dedication and commitment to community service. From 1992-1996, the Good Works Team was selected by the College Football Association. When the CFA disbanded in 1997, the AFCA began selecting the teams.
A three-year member of Baylor's Student-Athlete Advisory Council, the China Spring, Texas, native has been active throughout Central Texas during his Baylor career. Bell has given freely of his time for the Midway ISD carnival fund-raiser, Penelope ISD Red Ribbon Awareness week, Santa's Workshop, Bears `n' Books, Cub Club football clinic and Special Olympics mini-clinics.
In addition, Bell participated in a Marlin, Texas, bike race and parade benefiting a new community recreation center, visited the Hillcrest Professional Development School and worked at a Lil' Wranglers Round-up party benefiting the American Cancer Society.
"It never ceases to amaze me to see the contributions student-athletes make to their communities," AFCA Executive Director Grant Teaff said. "Often times, these young men are better known for the good things they do on the field. The AFCA is proud to recognize these student-athletes for the good things they do in their communities."
Nominations were submitted to the AFCA by the college sports information departments. Nominees have to be actively involved and committed to working with a charitable organization, service group or involved in other community service activities. Candidates have to display sincere concern and reliability, while also having made a favorable impression on the organizations with which they are involved. Athletic ability is not a criteria.
Bell and the 2-0 Bears return to the football field Saturday for a 2 p.m. (Central) nationally televised game (ESPN Classic) at 0-1 Army.
