WACO, Texas - After the second day of competition, Baylor's women's tennis team continued to excel at the Baylor Invitational this weekend. The Bears occupied three of the semifinal singles spots and two semifinal doubles spots after impressive victories in the quarterfinals. Two Bears, Carolin Walter and Zuzana Cerna, will compete in the singles final match while two Baylor teams, top-seeded Daniela Covello/Walter and Cerna/Klara Zrustova will battle for the doubles title. Both matches are scheduled for Sunday.

Walter opened the day by defeating TCU's Gloriann Lopez 6-2, 6-2 then Mihaylova beat fourth-seeded Svetlana Kouzmenko, from SMU, 6-0, 1-6, 6-3. Cerna also advanced to the semifinals after her 6-1, 6-0 victory over Andrea Morgado from TCU. Unfortunately, second-seeded Klara Zrustova was dealt a 6-1, 6-3 loss by SMU's eighth-seeded Natalia Bubien.

During the semifinals, Walter was paired against Mihaylova and defeated her teammate 6-3, 6-3. Cerna also won her match against SMU's Bubien 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Walter and Cerna will compete for the singles title Sunday.

In the singles consolation bracket's second round, Covello advance with a win over Iva Velkovska, from Southeastern Louisiana, posting 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 scores. Zuzana Krchnakova did not fare as well and was defeated by SMU's Halle Rambally 6-3, 1-6, 7-6. Baylor continued to advance through the quarterfinals when Covello defeated Bonnie Phillips of Southeastern Louisiana 6-4, 6-2. Covello will play in the semifinals at 9 a.m. Sunday.

The doubles bracket was equally dominated by Baylor teams as two tore through the quarter- and semifinals to seal spots in the finals. Covello/Walter defeated UTA's Marissa Brown and Anete Rozkalne 8-2. Then in the semifinals the first seeded team beat third-seeded Bubien/Kouzmenko, from SMU, 8-5. Baylor's team of Cerna and Zrustova upset UTA's second-seeded tandem of Klara Jagosova and Monika Peciulioyte with an 8-6 victory. The duo continued to win through the semifinals with another upset over Southeastern Louisiana's (4) Nina Knavs and Breda Kovac, 9-7. It was this duo of Knavs and Kovac that knocked out Baylor's Krchnakova/Mihaylova team in the quarterfinals, beating them 8-5. None the less, two Baylor teams will meet Sunday for the doubles title.

Krchnakova and Mihaylova then played in the doubles consolation quarterfinals but were again defeated. They lost 8-0 to Southeastern Louisiana's Emilija Arnaudovska and Iva Velkovska.

Play will continue Sunday with the singles consolation semifinals scheduled for 9 a.m. followed by doubles consolation and both singles and doubles finals.
