WACO, Texas - Baylor junior outside hitter Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) had a match-high 21 kills and added nine digs, but it couldn't make up for the absence of two starters in the Bears' 3-1 (29-31, 19-30, 30-21, 23-3) loss to Iowa State in Big 12 volleyball action Wednesday night at the Ferrell Center.
Already without junior middle blocker Desiree Guilliard-Young (Berkeley, Calif.), who is still out with a knee injury, Baylor (9-4, 1-1 Big 12) was without senior right-side hitter Kelly Spriggs (Houston, Texas), who had to return home to attend her grandfather's funeral.
Senior outside hitter Melanie Hamerly (Orange, Texas) hit .222 and recorded a career-high 12 kills, while senior middle blocker Stella Odion (Houston, Texas) added 10 kills and four aces. Sophomore middle blocker Amanda Modglin (Houston, Texas) hit .389 with nine kills and four blocks. Sophomore libero Kristen Schramek (San Antonio, Texas) led the Bears defensively with 18 digs.
Nicole Lorenzen led Iowa State (8-5, 2-1) with 19 kills, while Katie Jessen added 13 kills and 11 digs. Katie Churm led the Cyclones with 20 digs, while setter Amanda Craig had seven kills, 44 assists and 12 digs.
Baylor led nearly the entire way in game one, but Iowa State hung close enough and tied the game at 24. With the game tied at 29, Baylor was called for being out of rotation, then Iowa State got a block to end the game, 31-29.
Game two was all Cyclones as they hit .250 and held the Bears to a .047 percentage. Iowa State took control of the game with a 12-3 run to lead 25-16, then went on to a 30-19 win.
The Bears came back in game three, hitting .300 and holding the Cyclones to .108. A seven-point run gave Baylor a 26-13 lead and it held on for a 30-21 decision.
Iowa State jumped out to a 7-1 lead in game four, but the Bears bounced back and cut the lead to 11-10. A four-point run by the Cyclones from that point allowed them to hold on the rest of the way for the win as they clinched the match, 30-23.
Baylor returns to action when it faces Kansas Saturday at 7 p.m. in Lawrence, Kan.
