Commanding Start for Baylor Netters

WACO, Texas - Women's tennis opened its season with strong action on the first day of the Baylor Invitational Friday (Sept. 16). Six of Baylor's players are competing in the tournament, all of whom have advanced to the round of 16 as well as the quarterfinals in either singles or doubles. The tournament was delayed three hours this morning due to poor weather conditions including rain, but all of day one's matches were rescheduled and completed.
In the singles round of 32, sixth seed Daniela Covello swept Southeastern Louisiana's Jana Simurkova 6-0, 6-0 while Zuzana Krchnakova defeated Bonnie Phillips, also from Southeastern Louisiana, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6. In an upset, unseeded Iva Mihaylova beat Southeastern Louisiana's seven-seeded Iva Velkovska in a three set match, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6.
Baylor's Carolin Walter, Klara Krustova, and Zuzana Cerna, the tournament's first, second, and third seeds, were given byes and automatically advanced to the round of 16.
Baylor had four players to advance to the quarterfinals after winning its round of 16 matches. Walter defeated SMU's Monica Nevekloska 6-0, 6-0 in her first match of the day. Mihaylova continued to thrive beating SMU's Kristen Reid 6-2, 6-0. Cerna also advances to the quarterfinals after defeating Anete Rozkalne, from UT-Arlington, 6-3, 6-3. And lastly, Zrustova sent Southeastern Louisiana's Arnaudovska to the consolation bracket with a 7-5, 6-3 victory.
Two Bears suffered losses in the singles round of 16. Krchnakova was beaten by SMU's fourth-seeded Svetlana Kouzmenko 1-6, 7-6, 7-6, and Covello was defeated by TCU's Andrea Morgado 4-6, 7-5, 7-6. They will play tomorrow at noon in the consolation bracket.
In doubles play Krchnakova and Mihaylova defeated Andrea Martinez and Tara Shelander from Lamar 9-7, and team Cerna/Zrustova beat SMU's Halle and Brooke Rambally 8-5 as both Baylor duos advance to the quarterfinals. Baylor's Covello and Walter received a bye and will play their first doubles match Saturday in the quarterfinals.
The tournament will continue tomorrow with the singles quarterfinals starting at 9 a.m. and semifinals at noon while doubles quarterfinals will begin at 3 p.m. followed by the semifinals at 4:30 p.m. The championship matches, for both singles and doubles, will be played on Sunday.
