Sept. 29, 2005
WACO, Texas - The Riviera/ITA All-American Tennis Championships is the first of three national tournaments to be played during this 2005-2006 season, and the Baylor Bears are competing in all three. Head coach Joey Scrivano is sending three of his girls to compete against a highly ranked and competitive field in Pacific Palisades, Calif. from Oct. 1-9.
The singles draw includes 39 of the ITA's top 40 preseason ranked players, including Baylor's No. 29 junior Carolin Walter. Joining her in the singles field are teammates Zuzana Cerna, a nationally ranked 122nd junior, and Daniela Covello, a senior. Both Cerna and Covello will play Oct. 1-2 in the prequalifying tournament at UCLA and hope to join Walter in the qualifying tournament Oct. 4-5. Baylor's doubles duo of Covello and Walter, ITA preseason ranked 26th, will be competing in the doubles qualifying tournament also on Oct. 4-5. The Bears are hoping to advance to the 32-player and 16-doubles team main draw.
Top ranked Jennifer Magley from Florida highlights the singles draw while the first-ranked Georgia tandem Shadisha Robinson and Caroline Basu head up the doubles draw. There are eight other top ten singles participants as well as the ITA's second-ranked doubles team.
Play will begin Saturday, Oct. 1 and extends through the entire next week until the tournament's conclusion on Sunday, Oct. 9.
