Final Stats

WACO, Texas - Opening the spring season this afternoon, the Bears earned their first win with a solid 6-1 score against SMU. Baylor won two of the three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches.

Baylor picked up its first point early with two doubles wins by Zuzana Zemenova and Daniela Covello on No. 1 court, 8-4 and Zuzana Cerna and Iva Mihaylova on No. 2 court, 8-2. Zemenova and Covello won four straight games in the middle of their match against Svetlana Kouzmenko and Natalia Bubien while Cerna and Mihaylova had a five game streak that fueled their win over Kristen Reid and Georgiana Marta. On No. 3 court, after being down 2-5, Baylor's Zuzana Krchnakova and newly acquired Rachel Clark rallied back to tie the score but eventually fell to Holley and Brooke Rambally 8-6.

Cerna finished No. 2 court her singles match first with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Jennifer Chay, and Zemenova finished next on court one against Kouzmenko winning 6-1, 6-2. Covello posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Marta on court four just as Krchnakova defeated Reid 6-0, 6-1 on court 5. On the No. 6 court, SMU's Holley Rambally defeated Clark 6-2, 6-1.

The final match, No. 3 court, between Mihaylova and Bubien lasted just over two hours as Mihaylova rallied back and forth to a first set score of 7-5. The second set was much the same with games teetering between advantages until finally Bubien clinched the set at 6-4. In a tie-breaker, Mihaylova fell behind 8-3 in the race to 10 points before she hustled back to a crowd-pleasing 11-9 victory.

Baylor's win gives them a 1-0 record thus far this spring. The Bears will return to action on Jan. 28 when they travel to play their first conference match against Iowa State at 1 p.m. (Please note the time change.) Baylor doesn't have another home match until they meet UT-Arlington on Feb. 11.
