IOWA CITY, Iowa - Baylor's women's tennis team faced its first ranked opposition this morning when the No. 9 Bears played the No. 44 Hawkeyes in Iowa City, Iowa. Baylor claimed all three doubles matches to win the first point and then won four singles matches to earn the 5-2 victory.
Zuzana Zemenova and Daniela Covello remain undefeated, 3-0, when paired together in doubles. Today they beat Iowa's Megan Racette and Jacqueline Lee 8-5. Zuzana Cerna and Klara Zrustova, ranked 31st in the nation, beat Milica Veselinovic and Hillary Mintz 8-6. Wrapping up the doubles was another win for Baylor as Iva Mihaylova and Zuzana Krchnakova bested Krissy Dowlin and Kayla Berry 8-4.
In singles, Iowa's No. 21 Racette handed No. 17 Zemenova her first loss in 14 matches, dating back to last spring. Zemenova fell to Racette on court one 6-4, 6-4. The next match to finish was No. 9 Cerna on court two with a 6-2, 6-4 win over No. 93 Veselinovic but Iowa's Mintz tied the meet at 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over #80 Covello.
Baylor didn't lose another match streaking to a 5-2 win as Zrustova defeated Lee 6-2, 6-4, Mihaylova won 6-3, 2-6, 10-2 against Merel Beelen, and finally Krchnakova bested Dowlin 6-1, 6-1.
The Bears are 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in conference play as they won their first Big 12 match against Iowa State on Saturday.
Baylor's women's tennis team returns to action as they travel to Madison, Wisc. to play in the USTA/ITA Indoor Team Championships Feb. 2-5. The program's next home match will be on Feb. 19 when it hosts UT-Arlington.
