WACO, Texas -- On the strength of two first-half goals, the Baylor soccer team picked up a key Big 12 Conference victory with a 2-1 win over Oklahoma in action at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field on Sunday. With the victory, Baylor improves to 6-8-1, 3-4-0 in conference play, while Oklahoma falls to 6-9-1, 3-5-1 in Big 12 action with the loss.
"It was almost a must-win game for the team and I was pleased with the way the team responded," head coach George Van Linder said. "I thought we came out aggressively and I was pleased with the way the team protected the lead. It was a big win for the team and hopefully we can keep the momentum going."
It took just 90 seconds for Baylor to grab the lead as Missy McConnell lifted a pass across the field to a streaking Betsy Kyle who blasted a shot from 18-yards out over the goalkeeper's head and into the upper-right hand corner of the net, the first goal of her career, to give Baylor a 1-0 lead.
After Shana All's penalty kick goal in the seventh minute tied the game for Oklahoma, Baylor reclaimed the lead in the 25th minute. On a corner kick from McConnell, Anna Schuch collected the ball and crossed it to freshman Katie White. White found herself in great position and connected on a shot from five-yards out for her second goal of the season to give the Bears a 2-1 lead.
Baylor was in control the rest of the way as Oklahoma was unable to mount a serious offensive attack throughout the second half as the Bears evened the all-time series with the Sooners at 4-4-2.
The Bears held a decided 25-7 edge in shots as Anna Schuch led the way with seven shots in the victory.
McConnell added two assists in the victory while Ashley Holder picked up three saves in net to record the victory.
Jennifer Nichols made nine saves in net for the Sooners in the loss.
The game marked the final home matches for seniors McConnell and Schuch as the Bears will close out the regular season with three games on the road. Baylor will return to action on Friday, Oct. 20, when they travel to Lawrence, Kan., to face Kansas at 3:00 p.m.
