After dropping a 63-31 decision at No. 6 Texas, the Baylor football team returns to the friendly confines of Floyd Casey Stadium to host the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday, Oct. 21, at 2:05 p.m. (Central). Here are Baylor head coach Guy Morriss' thoughts about the Texas loss:
What went wrong in the second quarter last night?
"You know, they pressured the quarterback which led to an incomplete pass. Now you're looking at second and ten. We had an interception...The protection was okay, but then they shifted fronts. And we didn't adjust to it when they shifted fronts. A guy got loose right up the A-gap, so we're scrambling to get rid of the ball. It's just a combination of all three things."
Could you have done anything differently in the second quarter to slow them down?
"There was that whole first quarter and a half where we were doing a three step drop and cutting. We cut a lot more to try and slow the rush down. But we just didn't get them down. We didn't do a good job of cutting through the legs....So then we had a sack, fumble, two penalties. And we had a third and eighteen, a long situation, and Carl [Sims] was down on the other end of the field thinking it was a punt return. So that's what we got a delay for."
Could you tell on film that the match-up probably wasn't as bad as some thought going into the game?
"I think there were a handful of times that we got out-physicalled a little bit. But again, in getting out-physicalled, it's like a tackle being told to sit straight back off the ball, and he jumps outside and gets beat underneath. You're playing against great athletes, but still, your techniques will nullify the difference in athletic ability if you do what coach asks you to do. We had a bunch of that. Whether it was the pressure of a big game or the pressure of better athletes, we just kind of at times do our own things."
What was your outlook coming out of halftime down 28-10?
"Well, we knew we were getting the ball back. Let's take it down and put it in the end zone and get back in this thing. And we did that, but we couldn't sustain it."
Where do you go from here?
"Honest to goodness, I think we're in a situation where we could win out, or we could get beat in all five of them. That's what I'm talking [to the team] about today. You have got to trust what your coach is telling you to do, and do it. You've got to be disciplined enough to do like he's telling you to do it. It's just example after example and time after time... But overall, I came out of this game feeling like we can play with the big boys."
Did you go into this game thinking that you needed some help from Texas?
"I think it's to the point where you talk about, `we need to take care of our business."
Do you come out of this game frustrated?
"After the game I think I said, `I'm mad enough to bite a nail in two, but I'm kind of proud of the way we kind of hung in there.' We played hard. We just didn't play smart."
