FT. WORTH, Texas - Baylor women's tennis thrived in the first day of the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Women's Southwest Regional Championships hosted by TCU. Lenka Broosova, Zuzana Cerna, Klara Zrustova, Iva Mihaylova, and Jessica Zok advanced through the main draw's first round and are set to play the round of 32.
"We played some solid tennis today be we have a lot of work in some areas. The team is excited to get back on the court tomorrow and improve on today's performance," said head coach Joey Scrivano.
Cerna enters the tournament as the top seed and defeated Centenary's Christine Majchrowiz in quick straight sets 6-0, 6-1. Zrustova, the third seed, also posted a solid victory defeating Southeastern Louisiana's Breda Kovac 6-0, 6-2. Freshman Bear Broosova, the eighth seed, posted a win against UT-Arlington's Monika Peciulionyte 6-2, 6-0. Mihaylova, the 10th seed, bested Louisiana-Lafayette's Tammy Day in a grinding three set match, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(5), and Zok, the 13th seed, earned a win over Carmen Abeaboeru from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 6-1, 6-0.
Zuzana Chmelarova fell in the first round to Texas A&M's Anna Lubinsky, the second seed, 6-4, 6-3 while Jana Bielikova lost a grueling match to SMU's Clair Rietsch 6-3, 1-6, 5-7.
In doubles action Cerna and Broosova had a bye in the first round then defeated North Texas' Aziza Aba Burtain and Samantha Moreton 8-6 in the round of 32. Zrustova and Zok won in the first round, defeating Louisiana-Lafayette's Day and Channel Meijer but fell in the next round to Texas A&M's Anna Blagodarova and Marisa Druss.
