The Baylor football team is off to its best start ever in Big 12 play (3-1) and best overall in ten years (4-4). After Saturday's come from behind effort to defeat Kansas 36-35, the bears face No. 23 Texas A&M this Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Floyd Casey Stadium.
Here are Baylor coach Guy Morriss' thoughts on Saturday's win at home and this week's Battle of the Brazos against the Aggies:
What happened in the thirty minute gap where you didn't score?
"We fell asleep. That's basically what it was. During those series, somebody was goofing a play up every time."
What did you see in the fourth quarter that turned the offense around?
"I don't know. I don't know what they did. I guess they decided to go play."
Was there a sense of urgency?
"I guess. I'm assuming. I don't know. When they took the field, it didn't seem like anyone was in a different frame of mind or mood or mode or anything else. On those particular three drives, we did things right...I can't explain it. We didn't execute the two-point play. We acted like we were happy to have a touchdown, and we didn't execute the two-point play."
How important was the blocking by the receivers?
"Trent [Shelton] laid two guys out on two different plays: the long run by Ziggy [Dominique Zeigler] to the four and the one where he dove... That particular block on the run Ziggy made to the four, he probably would have been tackled right there on the twenty-five. That's a twenty yard difference."
What did you tell them at halftime?
"Well I said something at halftime that was kind of similar to what Bill [Bradley] said about getting your energy level up. We've gotta play with more passion."
Do you think that even for the whole team the energy wasn't there at the start of the game?
"Probably after seeing the film and seeing some of the mistakes we made, yeah. I don't know that we were on our toes as well as we could have been like we were last week, I thought. We just looked a little sluggish."
Did Shawn Bell surprise you at all?
"I don't know I think he was probably like the rest of them, just a little bit flat, not as crisp. What makes them go from flat to executing good enough to get it in the endzone? There are things that when we scored that we gotta fix on that play. We got away with it."
Are you glad that the goal posts didn't come down after this game?
"Definitely. I hope we get a little more used to winning. In the past, every time we beat a Big 12 team, we don't have to tear the goal posts down...We need to get accustomed to that."
Would you let them tear the goal posts down if you beat Texas A&M again?
"I can't stop `em. I'm not gonna try to stop `em."
Would that be a big enough win to do it in your mind?
"I don't think so. We've done that once already, and went to overtime with them last year."
