PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Baylor's Zuzana Cerna and Zuzana Zemenova bested ranked opponents Thur., Oct. 5, at the Riviera/ITA All-American in Pacific Palisades, Calif. The Bears will play in Friday's main draw round of 16 and with wins could play in Friday's quarterfinals.

Zemenova, the tournament's fourth seed (seedings reflect ITA national ranking), defeated UCLA's No. 28 Riza Zalameda in three sets, 6-1, 1-6, 6-1.

"It was an awesome match. ZZ did a great job of getting the most out of an off day. In a tournament like this every match has the feel of a championship match. We are extremely excited to have both of our players advance today," said head coach Joey Scrivano.

Zemenova will play South Florida's No. 72 Shadisha Robinson, who advanced through the qualifying rounds early in the week. Robinson, a former Georgia Bulldog who topped the rankings in 2002, and Zemenova met in 2004 when Robinson defeated Baylor's then-freshman 6-0, 6-1. The pair's round of 16 match is scheduled for Friday morning.

No. 14 Cerna played against New Mexico's No. 65 Iva Gersic in the first round and posted a straight-set win against the Lobo, 6-2, 6-3.

"Cerna from start to finish was just on top of her game. It was a good match from the standpoint that we didn't know much about [Gersic] so Cerna had to come up with a game plan during her match. She did a great job making adjustments to get the win. It was good for her to play that kind of match early in the season," said Scrivano.

Friday's round of 16 match pairs Cerna against the nation's top netter Audra Cohen of Miami (Fla.). Their Friday morning meeting will be the first.
