Softball Announces Fall Signing Class

WACO, Texas - Baylor softball head coach Glenn Moore announced the signing of five student-athletes to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday. The class, made up entirely of high school athletes, includes three players from the state of Texas.
"After signing our biggest recruiting class last season we had another outstanding signing period," head coach Glenn Moore said. "We will lose some power in the line-up following this season and this class is made up of some players who can fill that void from the moment they step on campus. In addition, this is an extremely athletic group that will help our program make strides in all areas from the moment they arrive."
The signing class includes the following players: Katlyn Freeland (IF, Pusch Ridge Christian Academy, Tucson, Ariz.), Taylor Marcum (IF/RHP, Purcell High School, Purcell, Okla.), Colby Vanham (C/IF, Uvalde High School, Uvalde, Texas), Jordan Vannatta (UTL, West High School, West, Texas) and Meagan Weldon (IF, Splendora High School, Splendora, Texas)
Katlyn Freeland, IF, 5-3, L/R, Pusch Ridge Christian Academy (Tucson, Ariz.)
Freeland, a 2006 second-team all-state selection, hit .380 last fall season with 40 runs scored and 12 stolen bases. A versatile player with speed, Freeland helped lead her club team, the Tucson Roadrunners, to the 2006 ASA Arizona state championship and the 2006 USSSA Arizona state title.
"Katlyn (Freeland) is a consistent player with a tremendous amount of speed," Moore said. "She comes to Baylor from one of the top programs out of the state of Arizona and she should provide an immediate impact up the middle defensively with her athleticism."
Taylor Marcum, 1B/P, 5-10, R/R, Purcell High School (Purcell, Okla.)
Marcum signs with Baylor after setting numerous school records at Purcell High School. The power-hitter has 15 career home runs and set a school record with six home runs for the Dragons a year ago. In addition, the right-hander will see some time in the circle for the Lady Bears as well. The two-time Sooner Conference most valuable player posted a 0.48 ERA last season.
"Taylor (Marcum) is a high-caliber recruit who is a fierce competitor," Moore said. "She has a bright future ahead of her. Her future is primarily at first base but she has the talent to see time in the circle for us as well."
Colby Vanham, C/IF, 5-9, R/R, Uvalde High School (Uvalde, Texas)
Vanham, a first-team all-district selection as a junior, signs with Baylor after hitting .424 with 26 runs and 32 RBI her junior season. The CyFair Intruders Gold club player is a three-year letter-winner in the sport of softball and has earned academic all-district honors as well.
"Colby (Vanham) is an extremely hard worker with a tremendous amount of upside," Moore said. "She will make us better from the start and is a very coachable player who should have a solid career."
Jordan Vannatta, UTL, 5-9, R/R, West High School (West, Texas)
Vannatta signs with Baylor following an outstanding career at West High School. The utility player plays club ball with the Texas Gold and is expected to make an immediate impact in the Baylor program with her hitting ability.
"Jordan (Vannatta) is one of the most naturally talented hitters we have ever signed," Moore said. "She is an extremely versatile player who can play almost any position. She is an exceptional hitter who should provide an immediate impact."
Meagan Weldon, IF, 5-5, R/R, Splendora High School (Splendora, Texas)
Weldon, the 22-AAA Offensive Player of the Year, signs with Baylor as a versatile middle infielder who will likely play at second base throughout her career. The Texas Eclipse club player was a 2006 TGCA all-state selection at the position and also earned Texas Sportswriters all-state honors as well.
"Meagan (Weldon) is an extremely athletic player who will see time in the middle infield, primarily second base," Moore said. "She comes from a long line of great athletes and her athletic ability will benefit our program throughout her career."
