What are the parameters for countable athletically related activity outside of the declared playing season?
Answer:
Football
According to Bylaw 17.1.5.2(b), between the last contest and January 1 (outside of the declared playing season) student-athletes may engage in required weight-training, conditioning, and review of game film up to a maximum of 8 hours per week with no more than 2 hours per week spent on viewing film. Activities that occur on January 1 and after (outside of the declared playing seeing) must be conducted pursuant to Bylaw 17.11.6.
Sports other than football:
According to Bylaws 17.1.5.2(a) and 17.1.5.2.2, outside of the declared playing season student-athletes may engage in required weight-training, conditioning, and skill-related instruction up to a maximum of 8 hours per week with no more than 2 hours per week spent on skill-related workouts. The number of student-athletes that may participate in such workouts at any one time in any facility varies throughout the year. A timeline is provided below:
First day of class - September 15: A maximum of 4 student-athletes may participate in skill instruction
September 15 - Start of declared playing season: More than 4 student-athletes may participate in skill instruction
End of declared playing season - April 15: More than 4 student-athletes may participate in skill instruction
April 15 - One week prior to start of final exams: A maximum of 4 student-athletes may participate in skill instruction
One week prior to start of final exams - Conclusion of final exams: No athletically related activities permitted
Note: For both the Fall and Spring terms, all athletically related activities outside the playing season are prohibited one week prior to the beginning of the final examination period for the applicable academic term through the conclusion of each student-athlete's final exams. At Baylor, Fall semester final exams begin Thursday, December 7, therefore NO athletically related activities may take place from Thursday, November 30 through the conclusion of each student-athlete's final exams.
