OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. --- Senior Baylor softball player Harmony Schwethelm was one of 20 collegiate players drafted to participate in the inaugural season of the PFX Tour, the professional fast-pitch softball tour announced Wednesday.
At the end of her senior season, Schwethelm will join the tour and travel to various amateur softball tournaments, competing against top-level amateur and professional team while providing instruction to teams competing at the PFX Tour stops.
Schwethelm, a senior from San Antonio, Texas, helped lead the Lady Bears to a 51-14 record last season as she became only the second player in school history to be named a NFCA All-America. Last season, Schwethelm set a new school record with 81 hits as she ranked third on the team with a .360 average while earning All-Big 12 Conference and NFCA All-Midwest Region honors.
The PFX Tour, founded by Team USA players Dot Richardson and Lisa Fernandez, is designed to help promote the sport worldwide, build an elite level for more than only a few select athletes, expand the sport's fan base, create an opportunity for athletes who have graduated from college to continue to play, provide a financial package that grows with the Tour's success to offer a career choice in the sport, generate value to sponsors for a "win-win" relationship and above all, give back to the sport from the grass roots up.
Schwethelm and the No. 10 Baylor softball team will open the 2006 season when the Lady Bears face Tulsa on Feb. 10, at 3:00 p.m. as they open play at the Getterman Classic.
