NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Baylor's women's tennis team faced off against rival Vanderbilt this morning in 27 degree weather up in Tennessee. The Bears have never defeated the Commodores and after today 4-3 loss, the Bears fall to 0-4 against Vanderbilt. The loss also breaks Baylor's three-match winning streak leaving the Bears with a 6-2 overall record and 3-2 against ranked opponents.
Vanderbilt took the early lead claiming the doubles point as their pairs went 2-1 against the Bears. Amanda Taylor and Maggie Yahner bested Baylor's No. 1 doubles team Zuzana Zemenova and Daniela Covello 8-2, while Liberty Sveke and Courtney Ulery defeated Iva Mihaylova and Zuzana Krchnakova on court No. 3, 8-6. Baylor ranked pair No. 31 Zuzana Cerna and Klara Zrustova came up with the Bears only doubles in on court two as they defeated Taka Bertrand and Amanda Fish 8-3.
Soon after, Vanderbilt pulled away to clinch the win by winning the first three singles matches. On court five, Caroline Ferrell defeated Mihaylova 6-3, 6-0 as Taylor upset No. 80 Covello 6-3, 6-2 on court three. No. 47 Bertrand clinched the win with her 7-6, 6-2 upset over No. 9 Cerna on court two.
Baylor finally earned a point in the fourth singles match to finish as Zrustova battled out a 6-2, 7-5 victory against Ulery on court four. Zemenova also tallied a point as she defeated Fish on court one 6-4, 7-4. The final point of the match was claimed by Krchnakova as she beat Sveke 7-6, 6-4 on court six.
The Bears will return to action as they host TCU at 6 p.m. on Feb. 22.
