WACO, Texas - The No. 16 Bears finally met the No. 12 Horned Frogs this evening after a five day delay due to poor weather. The match lasted for over four hours until the Bears finally rallied to win 4-3. After losing the doubles point to the Frogs, the singles matches went back and forth between Baylor and TCU wins. In the end, Zuzana Cerna and Zuzana Zemenova pulled out three-set wins to clinch the Baylor victory.
On doubles court No. 3, Iva Mihaylova and Zuzana Krchnakova quickly gained a 2-0 lead on Karine Ionesco and Andrea Morgado. From there the battle for the win teetered back and forth with TCU making a four point run and eventually winning the match 8-6. Cerna and Klara Zrustova faced the No. 8 duo from TCU, Helena Besovic and Anna Sydorska on court No. 1. The Bears lost the first game but quickly took a 5-2 lead early in the evening. TCU fired back with five straight wins to clinch the match 8-5.
Finally in doubles on court No. 2, Daniela Covello and Zemenova fell in their first three games to Ana Cetnik and Nicole Leimbach but Baylor's pair was able to fight back throughout the match to a 7-7 tie. The Bears won the tie-breaker 7-5 to earn an 8-7 win.
On court No. 5, Krchnakova defeated TCU's Kewa Nichols in an easy 6-3, 6-1 match to give the Bears their first point. Next TCU's Cetnik fought back to regain the Frog's lead by winning on court No. 4, 6-4, 6-3 against No. 97 Covello. Baylor once again tied the score when No. 88 Zrustova downed Sydorska 6-3, 6-2 on court No. 3.
Mihaylova fought through three tough sets against Gloriann Lopez but eventually fell 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 on court No. 6. The Bears needed to win the final two matches in order to claim the victory. No. 16 Cerna, on court No. 2, won her first set 6-4 against No. 31 Besovic but then fell 6-2 in the second set. Cerna held on to keep the overall win alive by winning her third set 6-4.
On court No. 1, No. 12 Zemenova also played through three sets of hard tennis before she finally upset No. 4 Leimbach. Zemenova lost her first set 3-6 but rallied to win her last two sets, 6-4, 7-5.
"Unbelievable win. The ladies have got to be proud of themselves because it was a huge win. At times when we do come through with a win like this, we have to give ourselves credit and be happy," said head coach Joey Scrivano.
The win against the Horned Frogs gives the Bears a 7-2 overall record.
Baylor's next match will be at the Baylor Tennis Center on Thursday, Feb. 2 against Fresno State at 6 p.m.
