LOS ANGELES, Calif. - After dropping an upsetting 4-3 match yesterday to Pepperdine, Baylor's women's tennis bounced back to overcome a 0-3 deficit this afternoon at USC. The Bears lost the doubles point early and also the first two singles matches before running the rest of the match winning four straight singles contests. The 4-3 win over the Trojans boosts Baylor's spring record to 12-3.
The doubles matches started slow for Baylor, only winning one of the three, as the Trojans earned the first point. USC's Carine Vermeulen and Dianne Matias blanked Zuzana Zemenova and Iva Mihaylova 8-0 while Judy DeVera and Amanda Fink defeated Daniela Covello and Zuzana Krchnakova 8-2. But Baylor's ranked duo, No. 24 Zuzana Cerna and Klara Zrustova, came up with a moral doubles victory on court one. The team bested Luana Magnani and Anca Anastasiu 8-3.
On the singles courts, the Bears dropped the first two matches to make the final four must-wins in order to stay alive to claim the overall win. After Krchnakova fell 7-5, 6-1 to Anastasiu on court five and Covello dropped a 6-3, 6-1 match to Magnani.
After an unfortunate afternoon slump, the Bears posted perhaps their best comeback this year. No. 13 Zemenova boosted Baylor's confidence by upsetting No. 3 Fink on court one. Zemenova lost the first set 0-6 but regained her game to overcome the Trojan 7-5, 6-1 and earn Baylor's first point. Next Mihaylova stepped up on court six to defeat DeVera 7-5, 6-4 and keep the Bears alive.
The final two matches of the evening last three sets each as Baylor fought hard to maintain a chance for the victory. Zrustova once again proved to be the solid player on court three with her outstanding win over Vermeulen. Zrustova's 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 win tied up the overall match between the Bears and the Trojans. As all eyes fell on court two, No. 14 Cerna captured Baylor's greatest upset of the season as she posted a fierce 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 over No. 48 Matias.
The action-packed match ended the Bears' California road trip where they tallied a win and a loss in two days. Baylor's women's tennis will return to action as they host Arkansas on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Baylor Tennis Center.
