March 20, 2006

WACO, Texas - Baylor's women's tennis team continues to dominate its spring schedule and looks to pick up two more wins this week with matches against Oklahoma and Georgia Tech. The Sooners will be in town on Tuesday with a 5 p.m. scheduled match time while the Yellow Jackets will play the Bears on Thursday at 2 p.m.

The Bears are ranked 15th in the Fila/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll and boast three singles players and one doubles team in the individual rankings. Sophomore Zuzana Zemenova is ranked 13th and junior Zuzana Cerna ranks next in line at 14th. Senior Daniela Covello also cracked the top 100 players by placing 94th. In doubles, Cerna and junior Klara Zrustova are ranked 24th. (ITA will release new rankings tomorrow afternoon, and the most recent numbers will be reflected in the release posted after the Oklahoma match Tuesday evening.)

Baylor could remain undefeated in conference play (4-0) with a win against the Sooners on Tuesday. Overall the Bears are 7-3 against Oklahoma since the teams' first meeting in 1997. The Sooners have been ranked as high as 61st nationally this year but enter Tuesday's with neither a team ranking nor any individual rankings. Oklahoma has a 6-6 overall record and 1-0 conference record this spring. Their solo Big 12 win was over Missouri on March 13, two days after the Bears defeated Missouri in Columbia, Mo.

On Thursday Georgia Tech comes to Waco ranked eighth in the nation with its 11-2 dual record. The Bears are 1-2 against the Yellow Jackets, with their only win posted in 1987 at the first meeting. Georgia Tech has five individuals ranked in the singles polls, Kristi Miller (2nd), Alison Silverio (50th), Tarryn Rudman (52nd), Lyndsay Shosho (56th) and Kelly Anderson (74th). In doubles, Shosho and Miller are ranked 12th, Silverio and Rudman are 44th, and Anderson and Whitney McCray ate 47th.

Both matches will be played at the Baylor Tennis Center. Live stats will be available for each match at www.baylorbears.com.
