Women Netters Hand Oklahoma 6-1 Loss

WACO, Texas - Baylor's women's tennis team extended its unbeaten conference streak to 18 matches this evening when the Bears defeated Oklahoma 6-1. The last time Baylor lost a Big 12 match was on April 16, 2004, when the Sooners were victorious, 4-3. With tonight's win, the Bears have a 14-3 overall record and a 5-0 conference record.

Although Baylor lost the doubles point, the 28th ranked team of Zuzana Cerna and Klara Zrustova picked up an 8-1 win against Oklahoma's Gabby Baker and Chelsea Orr on court one but Zuzana Zemenova and Iva Mihaylova surrendered their match to Christi Baxley and Irina Lykina. With Baylor's 8-3 loss on court two, Daniela Covello and Zuzana Krchnakova gave an admirable fight to clinch the doubles point by forcing a tie breaker after falling back 7-3 at one point to Anne Carter and Monica Purice. Once the score was tied at 8-8, the duos took turns earning points until the Sooners ran away with the match to win the tiebreaker 7-4 and the overall match 9-8. Their win earned Oklahoma the doubles point.

Krchnakova quickly earned Baylor its first point and tied the score at ones with her 6-2, 6-2 victory on court five over OU's Chelsea Orr, and Baylor didn't lose another match all evening. Soon after, Cerna defeated Irina Lykina 6-0, 6-2 on court two to give Baylor a 2-1 lead. Zemenova cleaned up on court one winning 6-2, 6-2 over Gabby Baker while Mihaylova clinched the match with her win over Brittany Baldy 6-2, 6-0 on court six. Covello battled against Christi Baxley on court four and came up with Baylor's fifth point with a 7-6(4), 6-3 win. And finally on court three, Zrustova won her first set 6-3 but fell back in the second set 3-6. But through a long, cold tiebreaker, Zrustova defeated Monica Purice 6-3, 3-6, 13-11 to give the Bears the overall 6-1 win.
