WACO, Texas - Baylor football players Geoff Nelson, Marlon Price, and Quincy Jenkins visited Hillcrest Professional Development School on Friday.
Paula Miller, the instructional specialist at Hillcrest PDS, asked the players to volunteer at the school that afternoon to inspire the students as they are about to take the TAKS test.
The players talked to the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades and the students listened attentively as each player talked about their academic experiences. Each player encouraged the students to work hard to pass the TAKS test.
The players also emphasized that athletic careers are short and an education is vital for life after athletics.
Jenkins said, "I'm graduating early in August. If I suffer a career-ending injury, I know I will always have my education."
The students asked the players questions regarding their role models and career goals. All the players have aspirations of going pro, but they added that they have other interests as well in the classroom and hope to be the best at whatever career they pursue.
Jenkins added that if every student passes the TAKS test at Hillcrest, he will come back and play football with them.
Baylor athletes and coaches frequently perform volunteer work in the community. To request the appearance of a Baylor student-athlete or coach, please contact Ray DeWeese at (254) 710-3073.
