WACO, Texas - Phil Tran and Paul Mosley were tour guides for Mrs. Speegle's third grade class when they came to tour the stadium. The students and teachers had a unique opportunity to see the inner workings of an athletic department.
The tour began on the second floor of the Carl and Thelma Casey Athletic Center where the guests saw the ticket office and the plaques of all the Baylor All-Americans.
The tour proceeded to the training room where the guests met director of sports medicine Mike Sims and associate director of sports medicine David Chandler. The students learned about injury prevention and rehabilitation and saw several Baylor athletes doing rehab and getting treatment for their injuries.
The tour continued to the weight room. The students saw Phil Tran demonstrate several exercises including the snatch, clean & jerk, and squat. Paul Mosley demonstrated the bench press and impressed the crowd by doing repetitions at 315 pounds. Graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach Stephen Sepulveda taught the kids about proper nutrition and the recovery shakes the players drink after workouts. The students also learned about the English and metric units used in the weight room and what safety precautions are used by the athletes.
Then, the players took the guests into the locker room where they showed the students the equipment they use for practice and for game days and gave them some insight into their pre-game routine.
After that, the players took the kids onto the game field to play a game of football.
Mrs. Speegle said the kids have been looking forward to this experience and that this is one of the highlights of their year.
Phil Tran commented, "I'm glad I had the opportunity to teach the kids a little bit about what I do first hand. Paul and I had as much fun as the kids did."
