Women's Tennis 3/5/2006 12:00:00 AM

March 5, 2006

WACO, Texas - Baylor's women's tennis blew past Oklahoma State this afternoon with a 6-1 win. Before the match began, both Baylor and Oklahoma State coaches decided to play singles matches first in case bad weather were to be an issue later in the evening. The singles matches started at 2 p.m. and doubles matches began around 3:20 p.m.

In singles, Baylor quickly took a 3-0 lead over the Cowgirls with wins on courts four, two, and three. No. 97 Daniela Covello finished first with her outstanding 6-0, 6-1 win over Yawna Simmons. No. 16 Zuzana Cerna defeated Zana Masnic next in another quick match that ended 6-2, 6-0. No. 88 Klara Zrustova tallied Baylor's third point with an easy 6-1, 6-1 win over Lauren Simmons.

Baylor's No. 12 Zuzana Zemenova clinched the match for the Bears as she battled against Iryna Tkachenko on court one. She finished off the Cowgirl 6-4, 6-2.

In the last two singles matches to wrap up, Zuzana Krchnakova fought hard after falling 3-6 on court six to Zuzanna Osinska. In the second set, Krchnakova dominated to win 6-1 which led to the tie-breaker that Krchnakova sealed 10-3 to earn the Bears fifth point. And on court five, Iva Mihaylova battled with Marta Tsivka but fell 7-6 (6), 6-2 in the final singles match this afternoon. Tsivka tallied Oklahoma State's first and only point.

Following singles play and having won the overall match, Baylor made doubles line-up changes. Krchnakova stepped in for Zemenova to play with Covello on court one and on court three, head coach Joey Scrivano gave his walk-on doubles duo, Sammi Gottlich and Rachel Clark some conference experience. Oklahoma State's head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski decided not to change his initial doubles partners.

Gottlich and Clark finished first as they fell to Simmons and Osinska 8-1 on court three, but soon after, Krchnakova and Covello evened up the doubles battle with their court one win, 8-4, over Tkachenko and Tsivka. At that point Zrustova and Mihaylova had just pulled ahead to 5-4 in their doubles match against Masnic and Allen. The Cowgirls won three-straight games and eventually put the score at an even 8-8. In the tie-breaker, the Bears pulled ahead 3-0 but once again the Cowgirls tied up the score. Once at 4-4, Mihaylova and Zrustova finished off the Cowgirl duo 7-4. Baylor's court two final doubles score was 9-8(4).

This week Baylor pulled off four wins which started a four-match winning streak. The Bears have earned a 10-2 overall record and 3-0 Big 12 record on the season.

With a break in the home schedule, Baylor will travel to Missouri to face another conference foe on March 11 before heading off to California for matches against Pepperdine and Southern California on March 14 and 15. The next home match for the Bears is on Saturday, March 18 against Arkansas at 1 p.m.
