LAFAYETTE, La. - The 12th-ranked Baylor men's golf team continued its hot streak, shooting 21-under par 555, to take a four-stroke lead after the first two rounds of the Louisiana Classics Monday at the 7,002-yard, par-72 Oakbourne Country Club. The Bears, in search of their third consecutive victory, collectively shot nine out of 10 rounds at even-par or better.
Junior Jeremy Alcorn (Brownwood, Texas) opened with a 3-under par 69, then followed with a 5-under par 67 and is tied for the individual lead at 8-under par 136. Alcorn has four career victories, two behind senior teammate Ryan Baca (Richmond, Texas), the leader on Baylor's all-time list.
Baca, who has finished first each of the last three tournaments, is still in the hunt for a fourth straight title as he is tied for fourth three strokes back at 139. He opened with a 4-under par 68, then carded a 1-under par 71 in the second round.
Junior Jeremy Frye (Palestine, Texas) is also trying to keep a streak alive as he has finished in the top 10 in the last two tournaments. He is alone in seventh, four strokes behind at 140, after an even-par 72, then a 4-under par 68.
Sophomore Wes Williams (Franklin, Tenn.) is tied for 14th at 2-under par 142. He shot an even-par 72 in the first, then a 2-under par 70 in the afternoon. Sophomore Brian Meck (Austin, Texas), who has been solid in the No. 5 spot, is tied for 23rd at 1-under par 143. Meck opened with a 2-under par and shot the Bears' only above par round of the day with a 1-over par 73 in the second.
Alcorn is tied with Houston's Ricky Romano, who shot back-to-back rounds of 68 for his 8-under par 136. Houston's Kevin Newman is alone in third, one stroke behind at 137 (67-70), and is two strokes up on the three-man, fourth-place group that includes Baca.
The Bears, which shot 9-under par 279 in the morning and the lowest round of the tournament with a 12-under par 276 in the afternoon, have a four-stroke lead over Houston, which shot 559 (281-278). Missouri trails by 12 strokes at 567 (282-285), while Southeastern Louisiana (293-277) and SMU (289-281) are tied for fourth, 15 strokes behind at 570.
The tournament concludes with the third and final round Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m.
