OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - After falling to Kansas, 5-1, in game one of the day, the No. 19 Baylor softball team was unable to respond as the Lady Bears fell to No. 14 Nebraska, 7-1, in the second game of the day to be eliminated from the Big 12 Conference Championships on Thursday. With the losses, Baylor falls to 36-20 on the season as Kansas improved to 31-24 on the season while Nebraska improved to 41-9.
In game one against the Jayhawks, Kansas got a key two-out hit from Jessica Moppin in the top of the first to grab an early 2-0 lead.
Baylor cut the lead to one with a run in the fourth when Kylie Conroy singled to score Chelsi Lake with two outs to make the score 2-1.
It would be the only runs the Lady Bears would manage; however, as Kansas added a run in the fifth and two more in the seventh to send Baylor to the loser's bracket with a 5-1 victory.
Ferguson took the loss to fall to 18-13 on the season after allowing four earned runs on eight hits in 6.1 innings of work.
Serena Settlemier picked up the victory for Kansas and improved to 17-6 on the season after allowing one run on four hits in five innings of work. Kassie Humphreys picked up the save after tossing the final two innings of work.
Unfortunately for the Lady Bears, it was more of the same in game two as Nebraska jumped out to an early three-run lead with a run in the first and a two-run home run by Ashley DeBuhr in the second to make the score 3-0.
Tessa Lynam's RBI single in the fourth brought home Harmony Schwethelm for Baylor's only run in the game as Nebraska posted four insurance runs the rest of the way to pick up the six-run victory.
Brittany Turner picked up the loss and fell to 5-4 on the season after allowing two runs on one hit in one-plus inning of work.
DeBuhr picked up the win after allowing only two hits while striking out 12 in seven innings of work as she improved to 23-7 on the season.
Baylor was without the services of Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Year Brette Reagan, who suffered a high ankle sprain in pre-game workouts before the start of game one. The freshman is listed as day-to-day as the Lady Bears head into the NCAA Softball Championships.
The Lady Bears will await their fate at the NCAA Softball Championships when the selections are announced on ESPNews at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 14. The Baylor softball team will hold a watch party at Buffalo Wild Wings in Waco as the public is invited to attend.
